If you are planning to drive your own tuktuk, car or even scooter during your holidays in Sri Lanka, it is important to know that the French driving license is not valid in this country. In order to drive your vehicle in Sri Lanka you must have an international license, called “International Drivers Permit” (IDP) which will be used to make your Sri Lankan license. Below are four easy steps to help you with the process:
What you have to do:
- Go to the ANTS website and complete the pre-registration. Bring a photocopy of your ID, your driver’s license and proof of your address.
- Print and fill out this form and gather the following documents: a color copy of your valid ID, two recent photos, proof of your address (electricity bill or water bill for example) and a color copy of your French license.
- Put everything in an envelope and send it to the following address:

Once you have obtained your International Driving Permit, you are just one small step away from getting your Sri Lankan driving license. If you want to do it yourself, you can visit the Automobile Association of Ceylon (AAC) office in Colombo or Kandy.
You will need :
- LKR 7662.50 (about $25 USD, keep in mind that the exchange rate can vary!).
- International Driving Permit (IDP).
- Your passport (hard copy), driving license (hard copy) and your visa, just in case!
- A bit of patience with the Sri Lankan system. Although it is generally a quick process, you may have to wait a little while during peak times. Don’t worry, there is air conditioning in the office!

Je viens vous demander si il y a possibilité de faire mon permis international et mon permis pour le sri lanka en sachant que je suis déjà sur l ile. Je suis sur Mirissa et je n ai donc pas pensé a faire ces démarches la avant d arriver ici. Et si oui comment faire et si c est possible pouvez vous vous en occuper.
