Gal Viharaya
A Buddhist temple (UNESCO World Heritage Site) at Polonnaruwa, has the most perfect Buddha statue hewn out of solid stone. Click here for directions to this location.

Ancient Library (Potugal Vihara)

HOW TO GET TO POLONNARUWA FROM COLOMBO
How to get to Polonnaruwa from Colombo by train
You could take the train from Colombo fort to Batticaloa and get off at Polonnaruwa. The journey would last for 6 hours and 25 minutes and cost you Rs 750 for first-class (which will guarantee you a seat).
How to get to Polonnaruwa from Colombo by bus
From Colombo Bastian Mawatha Bus terminal you could hop into a bus (15-7) which goes to Vavuniya and get off in Dambulla (which will cost Rs 230, and take around 4 hours), and from Dambulla, you could take a taxi which will cost you around Rs 2700 and your journey would last for an hour.
OR
You could hop into the bus that takes the 48-3 route from Colombo fort straight to Polonnaruwa.
How to get to Polonnaruwa from Colombo by taxi
You can also arrange a private vehicle and driver to take you.
This is the fastest but most expensive way to travel. It will take approximately 3 hours and 40 minutes from Colombo to Polonnaruwa which will cost you around Rs 18000 – Rs 22000.
