Dutch fort Batticaloa
Bearing a long history, this lighthouse was built by the Portuguese back in 1628 before being captured by the Dutch on the 18th May 1795. After 1795 the lighthouse was used by the British. The fort is still standing tall where it is surrounded by two lagoons on either side. The fort houses a few government departments inside the old building at present. Navalady Beach

Batticaloa Gate is a monument that stands in the old docks of the city harbor at the end of Gandhi Park. HOW TO GET TO BATTICALOA FROM COLOMBO
How to get to Batticaloa from Colombo by train
You could take the train from Colombo fort to Batticaloa on a daily basis, the train stops in Valaichchenai. Trains are available one trip in the morning and evening from Colombo. The journey would last for 8 hours and 30 minutes and cost you Rs 500-700 for second-class (which will most of the time guarantee you a seat).
How to get to Batticaloa from Colombo by bus
From Colombo Pettah Kolikadai Manning market you could hop into a luxury AC bus (route 48 – 14) which goes to Kattankudy (which will cost Rs 650 to Rs 1200, and take around 7.5 hours), and from Kattankudy, you could take a taxi or a tuktuk to Batticaloa which will cost you around Rs 300 depending on where your accommodation is.
How to get to Batticaloa from Colombo by taxi
You can also arrange a private vehicle and driver to take you via a rental car or use one of the apps named Uber or Pick me (Sri Lankan Uber). This is the fastest but most expensive way to travel. It will take approximately 6 hours and 50 minutes from Colombo to Batticaloa assuming you take the Expressway for a part of your journey. The ride would cost you around Rs 30,000 – Rs 35,000.
