This historical city was used to be the capital of the Kingdom of Ruhunu as far back to the 3rd century B.C. There are 5 lakes in the vicinity of this city, Tissa Wewa; Yoda Wewa; Weerawila Wewa; Pannegamuwa Wewa; and Debarawewa Wewa. Wirawila Tissa Santuary

Tissamaharama Raja Maha Viharaya

This ancient Buddhist temple is one of the four major Buddhist monasteries in Sri Lanka. Believed to be an eminent Buddhist educational center from the 3rd century B.C and 11th century A.D, this viharaya has one of the largest stupas in Sri Lanka. You can find the location here.

Tissa Wewa

How to get to Tissamaharama from Colombo by train

You could take the train from Colombo Fort to Beliatta, trains are available daily as there are no direct train routes to Tissamaharama. The journey would last for 3 hours 50 minutes to Beliatta and would cost you around Rs 250 to Rs 480 for second-class (which will most of the time guarantee you a seat). From Beliatta, you could take a taxi or a bus.

How to get to Tissamaharama from Colombo by bus

From the Colombo Bastian Mawatha Bus terminal, you could hop on a bus to Katharagama (route 1-12/32). Would cost Rs 280 – Rs. 380, and take around 5 hours 45 minutes. From Katharagama you can take a taxi or a tuktuk to Tissamaharama.

How to get to Tissamaharama from Colombo by taxi

You can also arrange a private vehicle and driver to take you via a rental car or use one of the apps named Uber or Pick me (Sri Lankan app). This is the fastest but most expensive way to travel. It will take approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes from Colombo to Tissamaharama. The ride would cost you around Rs 22,000 – Rs 28,000.
