Once a foreign King landed in Weligama who was infected with a skin disease (‘kushta” in Singhalese ) has landed in Weligama bay and was treated by a local doctor. This king was restored to his original strength and to remember him (the “kushta raja” or the “Kushta King” an image of him was carved and this was known to be “Kushta Raja Gala” or Rock of the Kushta King. It is argued that if the story is true then, the King should have carved the statue of the doctor with a respect to him and not vice versa. You can find this location here.

HOW TO GET TO WELIGAMA FROM COLOMBO
How to get to Weligama from Colombo by train
You could take the train from Colombo Fort to Weligama, trains are available daily. The journey would last for 2 hours 15 minutes to Weligama and would cost you around Rs 130 to Rs 450 for second-class (which will most of the time guarantee you a seat).
How to get to Weligama from Colombo by bus
From the Colombo Bastian Mawatha Bus terminal, you could hop into a bus to Matara (route 2/1) and make a stop in Weligama. Would cost Rs 170 – Rs. 250, and take around 2 hours 45 minutes.
How to get to Weligama from Colombo by taxi
You can also arrange a private vehicle and driver to take you via a rental car or use one of the apps named Uber or Pick me (Sri Lankan app). This is the fastest but most expensive way to travel. It will take approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes from Colombo to Weligama. The ride would cost you around Rs 12,000 – Rs 16,000.
