Sights in Negombo

Muthurajawela Wetland

One of the main bird watching locations in Sri Lanka. There are many varieties of flora and fauna that are interdependent in this coastal ecosystem, and you can also go on a relaxing boat ride in the lagoon while watching out for more birds as wildlife.

Negombo Fish-market

The Negombo fish market is interesting because it takes place right on the beach, fresh from fishing boats. Crowds of fishermen are seen untangling their fishing nets and stretching out miles of fish to dry in the sin.

Negombo Lagoon

Enjoy a refreshing express tour under the shade of a coat canopy. You can go on a full circuit of the regular tour including the Hamilton canal, fishing port, the lagoon inlet to the sea, the mangrove forest islands and the vast main lagoon.

St.Mary’s Church

is a beautiful place to visit. The stained glass and the paintings spanning the church’s entire ceiling are awesome to witness, especially considering that the church goes back almost a century and a half.

Angurukaramulla Temple

It’s best known for its epic statue of the Buddha, and its dragon-entrance, inside you find detailed murals that date back centuries. There is also a 300+-year-old ruin of a historic library here, covered in moss.

Prison

Built on the ruins of a Portuguese fort by Dutch in 1644. It was demolished in the late 19th century by the British, who used its stones to build a prison.

Food & Drinks

Real Sri Lankan food is hard to come by in Negombo, so don’t get too excited about the food here. Many of the restaurants serve an array of western dishes and some local specialties.

Black Coral

Features an exciting selection of signature culinary creations for a memorable dining experience by the ocean. It would cost between $12-$15 for a main meal per person.

Greek Grill

Authentic Greek and Mediterranean food, cost between $2-$6 per person for a meal.

Coronation Restaurant & bar

A relaxing atmosphere with some good food, prices range from $3-$8 per person for a meal.

Coco beach

Great and quality cocktails from the pub, they have some pretty interesting cuisines like Italian, Chinese and Thai, prices range from $4-$10.

Besides if you walk along the streets of Negombo, you’ll come across some street shops that serve short eats, and finger food for very cheap.

How to get to Negombo from the Airport

Getting to Negombo by taxi

The best option to travel from the airport to Negombo is by taking a taxi (Uber/Pickme) which will cost you around Rs 400 – Rs 500, where the journey will take about 12 minutes.

Getting to Negombo by bus

From the bus stop near the airport, you can hop on a bus to Negombo (bus no187 or 240).

How to get to Negombo from Colombo

How to get from Negombo to Colombo by train

There are regular train services from Colombo to Negombo. The journey lasts approximately 1.5 hours. Third class costs about RS 40.

How to get from Negombo to Colombo by bus

There are regular bus services from the main bus station in Colombo (Pettah) to Negombo (bus no.240). You’ll find that the travel time is approximately 1.5 hours and buses depart frequently.

Keep in mind Red is for Government buses and white is for private buses, however, the fare is the same which is about Rs 70.

How to get from Negombo to Colombo by taxi

You can also arrange a private vehicle and driver to take you. This is the fastest but most expensive way to travel. It will take approximately 30-40 minutes from Colombo to Negombo by private vehicle which will cost you around Rs 1700 – Rs 2200.
