Udawalawe is a geographically small town in the Southern part of the Rathnapura district, and fairly closer to the Hambantota and Monaragala districts as well. This town accommodates the world-renowned Udawalawe National Park, and its major population of wild Asian elephants and amazing biodiversity has attracted many tourists around the world.

Elephant Transit Home
Situated within the Udawalawe National Park this transit home was set up in 1995, with the sole purpose of rehabilitating orphaned elephants to eventually be released to the wild. You are not allowed to make any interaction with the wild elephants but can enjoy watching them at their feeding time. The entrance fee is Rs.500 per person. You can find this location here
Sankapala Raja Maha
This majestic temple stands strong in a beautiful rocky mountain and is serene and beautiful with monks meditating inside peacefully. It’s definitely worth the trip climbing this rock as it awaits the most amazing view from the top. You can find the location here.
Waulpane Ella Falls

HOW TO GET TO UDAWALAWE FROM COLOMBO
How to get to Udawalawe from Colombo by train
You could take the train from Colombo fort to Beliatta on a daily basis as there are no direct trains to Udawalawe, where trains are available three to four times a day. The journey would last for 3 hours and 40 minutes to Beliatta and would cost you Rs 200 to Rs 500 for second-class (which will most of the time guarantee you a seat). From Beliatta you would need to get a taxi to Udawalawe. This can be arranged with a car rental company or via Uber or Pickme (Sri Lankan app) for a price of Rs.5000 – Rs.7000 and would take 1 hour 30 minutes to Udawalawe.

How to get to Udawalawe from Colombo by bus
From Colombo Bastian Mawatha Bus terminal you could hop into a bus to Embilipitiya (route 122 – 3) which will cost Rs 300, and take around 4 hours, and from Embilipitiya you could take a taxi or a tuktuk which will cost you around Rs 700 depending on where your final destination is in Udawalawe
How to get to Udawalawe from Colombo by taxi
You can also arrange a private vehicle and driver to take you via a rental car or use one of the apps named Uber or Pick me (Sri Lankan app). This is the fastest but most expensive way to travel. It will take approximately 3 hours from Colombo to Udawalawe, The ride would cost you around Rs 18,000 – Rs 20,000
